Zach Price – Percussion and Guitar
Zach began his musical career by singing in a punk rock band
called
Plaid Wednesday at the age of 16. However, after hearing conga drums
featured on a live Santana song, Zach became determined to learn conga
drumming. "From that moment on, I began expanding my musical horizons.
It started with Latin rock and then moved into funk, Cuban, Indian,
Brazilian and African music. Now African and Latin music are about the
only styles of music I listen to."
14 years and many
lessons later, Zach still enjoys learning new rhythms and instruments.
In addition to the tumbadoras and the electric guitar, he enjoys
playing Kora, Didgeridoo, Kuitiro, Flamenco guitar, Sitar and whatever
else the continent of Africa will ship him.
Zach
gives thanks to his many teachers, including Carl Holm, Modibo Traore,
Arturo Rodriguez, Kane Mathis, Jeff Lewis and Abdulae Diabate.
"Lately,
I have been playing a lot of Mandinka Kutiro music from Gambia. My
study of Kutiro drumming has really changed my approach to playing
congas. Now more than ever, I'm trying to play with the dancer in mind.
I love Cuban dance music, because as a drummer one is free to add
subtle flavors and influences from the folkloric rhythms of other
cultures."
